They are fairly ok but not as good as my Citroen C1. The Smart has fairly wide tyres on the back for a small car, mine were 175's, but the engine weight is over these and I'm 20 stone! The Smart also has esp which helps. Last winter I past a BMW X5 stuck on a smallish hill, in the C1 which only had summer tyres on, for this winter I've bought some proper winter tyres which should make a huge difference.

I don't recall seeing many Smart Cars out last winter. The skinny front wheels would be good for directional grip, but the fat rear wheels and RWD would make them nearly as bad as most BMWs/Mercs.

They are because the engine is over the driving wheels, but the rear tyres are too wide for good grip in the snow. If you could(but you can't) putting two front wheels on the back would make a BIG difference.

The problem with BMW's & Mercs is both are rwd but engine is in the front, so no weight over the driving wheel. The VW Beetle was a brill car in the snow rwd rear engined and narrowish tyres.
