Suzy, I know the concept of a ransom strip. Who would be ransoming who?

I suppose if I owned it, then the possibility of a dispute and/or boundary change would hang over the neighbours. I could negotiate to sell it to them I suppose.

Is that what you mean? Provided I am happy to own a house with a 1.25 acre garden and only a 1M max access from the front, I can't see how I could be held to ransom on the other hand.

'Ransom' strips have no intended victim - just the owner of them usually thinks there is some value in them.

Who knows what the vendor is thinking/up to but there's a better description of 'ransom' strips and possible reasons here - http://www.homebuilding.co.uk/feature/plots-ransom-strips

From the dimensions you have now given it sounds as though this strip of land would provide enough room for car access down the side of the house.
    - Or possiby without this additonal land the plot as it is would not be wide enough for road access if more houses were built on the land (after demolishing the current buildings).
    - Or some 'ransom' strips exist to prevent further development.

I would like to know how the vendor thinks he can sell this land while ownership is in dispute. Surely any good solicitor would want the issue sorted before purchase of the land is complete.

Can anybody help with this dispute. We bought a house, which came with 2 parking bays around the back. And we have the deeds to state where our boundaries lie. Around the back, where the car bays are, is run by a maintenace company, who maintain the grounds. As we have a small garden and only one car, we have decided to put up a shed, in one of our bays which is closest to house, and does not stop anyone or interver with anyone else, (neighbours) when they want to park. Now the maintenance company are saying that we do not have the right to errect a shed on our own property that is within our boundary. I have contacted the land regisrty who just gave us a copy of our deeds basically, and said contact a solictor to confirm, which cost money which we dont have.

starting your own thread is the best idea, hijacking another leads to confusion.
