hi all, quick question, got a mortice lock on the front door (old wooden door, not a upvc) and the lock has started sticking, both inside and outside, i'm pretty certain next door has same as us (v similar front door put on when l.a owned) and hers stuck last year (i remember her having problems with it), could a quick squirt of wd40 sort it out or is it a new lock?
Who remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?

My mortice lock was sticking recently. This was caused by the key becoming slightly worn. Had to have a new key cut.0

Could be the door has swollen in the damp putting pressure on the bolt bit when it is in the locked position.
We get this.
If so plane the door down a bit to free the door a little , get a small diamond file and file inside the bit that the bolt slides into on the door frame again to release the pressure.
I wouldn't use WD40/oil in locks it can congeal with dust and makes things worse in the long run.. Use graphite powder instead (even shaved a pencil lead with a sharp knife and used the bits when none available).
Possibly wear on the lock itself but try the above first.
Take care with new keys as locks/keys often wear together and a new cut doesn't always work."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

the door needs a good shove to get it to close fully, otherwise it doesnt quite close all the way (only a few mm out if that makes sense), always been like that so i just bolt it at the top and its fine
does that make any difference?Who remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?0 -

Sounds like it wasn't fitted correctly at the outset. Just a little change in moisture levels can make all the difference.
Working out where it is "binding" on the frame and planing some off the door may help."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

With the door open try the lock from both sides, if it works correctly then the lock is ok. I would then look at how the door shuts and the lock keep on the frame, look for signs of rubbing. When you find whats wrong, sort it before it gets worse."Nil Sine Labore" - Nothing Without Labour0
