    i also thought that to claim childcare costs, the child needed to be looked after by a recognised childcare provider OUTSIDE of their own home.

    I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

    yeah, this was my feeling when I first looked at it. I have struggled to find anything 'official'. However, the au pair/nanny websites have all the info I've given above and are consistent with it so I have to assume it's correct. I will of course discuss with Tax Credits prior to making any final decision.

    I don't know the details so I can't really help with any specifics... I just wanted to pitch in and say that my friend recently made this same decision - she hired a young man to be au pair to her two little boys and she's been delighted with him. Her boys had to move into one bedroom together, but it's a tiny sacrifice worth making :wink:.
