Coop bank help

I am at my wits end with Coop bank staff! I have had a cashminder account for a few years and pay regular money in, we wanted to add my husband on and the branch said this was fine. But he has been declined on credit check? They didnt mention it involved a check when we were in Branch. But its a basic account for people who have had previous credit problems, in fact my Husband has no debt as such but is out of work so has missed 2 credit card payments and has an overdraft on his own Santander account. Our mortgage is upto date.
Can we appeal and if so how??

I am presuming they will decline the smartsaver as well but the branch have twice not sent the id to the correct department!!

Any info would be appreciated.

They perform an ID check rather than a credit check and if your husband is not on the electoral roll or has cifas markers this is likely why they wouldnt add him.

Check he is on the electoral roll and send a letter to co-op's complaints department calmly recounting what has gone wrong and giving as much extra history on your husband as you can i.e. last 3 years previous addresses etc. They will then be able to reconsider but he MUST be on the electoral roll.

As an aside though can I ask why you want to add him to the account, it sounds like his credit problems are less than yours so unless you already have a financial association somewhere (Mortgage?) it may not be the best move to link them.

Also dont forget Nat West & RBS offer a savings account with a Visa Debit Card that can be used as a joint account so he can access funds etc.

Don't open a smartsaver account. Its paltry interest rate means your are practically throwing money down the drain.
  • Firstly in Northern Ireland there is not the choice of bank such as Lloyds, RBS, Natwest.

Secondly everything comes out of this account inlcuding our joint mortgage and I want my husband to have some control of this account as well as myself and be able to deal with payments.

Thirdly he has been passed for the Smart Saver once they receive his id which the branch seem to have lost twice.....they advised us it was quicker to open a smartsaver so we could bank a joint cheque.

This week I have been in branch 3 times and made 5 calls and just get passed from pillar to post ie the branch say they have approved the id yet telephone team say this isnt so.....just appalled at what they call customer service so writing a complaint in to the Manager.

Halifax, Ulster, Santander, Northern Bank, Bank of Ireland, Nationwide Building Society, Britannia, Allied Irish, HSBC, Barclays.

It's not a bad start. I'm sure there are others!
  • Northern Bank declined yesterday which is concerning as its a very basis account.

If he's been declined by two banks then there must be an issue with their ability to identify him, you haven't said whether he is on the electoral register, if he isn't then that's probaly the cause of the declines and he needs to get on it asap (and then wait a few months before applying again as it can take a while for it to be available for ID checks).
  • Ok he is on the electoral roll but we have moved cities so will this be causing the problem? I have printed off the form to update this, however the other problem we have is lack of utility bills in either of our names, ie we rent and the gas and electric are cards, there is no council tax or water to pay and the phone bill is in my name.

They need a bill to proof he has lived here 3 months.

I am presuming this is why he cannot be identified??
  • Also presume it would even be difficult to open a savings account without electronic verification?
