Been asking the same question myself about some storecupoard stuff .......but they have a best before date .....quite different from a use by date ...but I'm still umming and ahing"Every time you feel yourself getting pulled into someone else's nonsense, tell yourself: Not my circus, not my monkeys." - Mark Borkowski.

Have to be careful with tinned foods too, although they are sealed and cant really go off, the date on alot of them refers to the protective coating on the inner can with most cans being aluminium (which can be toxic) breaking down, exposing the food stuff to the aluminium, which can dissolve into the food.
As for Use by dates of fresh food, I woulnt mess and chance it, cooked foods are ok by a day or at most two IMO
Best before dates - i have eaten foon thats couple of weeks passed this - as it says its a best before - after this the quality deteriorates but is still mor ethan edibleNo Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

Oh, come off it! Are you seriously suggesting that we should all follow the nanny state's diktats and slavishly obey all dates, washing/dry-cleaning instructions and the like? How much food must you throw away?? This is a money-saving board, and personally, I'd sniff first and decide later on the chicken.0 -
Thanks all for replies. The chicken did in fact smell fine. Even better once it was seasoned with some cajun spices. We are having it with a cheesey pasta. Can't wait i'm starving now!0

You still alive, then? Any ill effects?0

Curses! Just realised my mealplan is out the window because I misread the 'Best Before' date on my whole chicken: it expired yesterday. It is a Wye Valley one rather than a Value one, so my question is whether any MSEers have an opinion on whether it would be safe to roast it tonight.
On a wider note, why is it that some meat is considered better when it is 'older' but not chicken?
Thank you for your help,
Louise x0 -
Personally I wouldn't touch it after the best before date, in fact i don't touch it on the date either. But then I am pregnant and being ultra careful.
I would say as soon as a smell is omitted.

Personally I go by the smell!! I always wash meat before using it, if it smells or just doesnt look right then I chuck it but otherwise I make sure its really well cooked.Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!0
