Foreign country drive experience, does it count?

Options
Hi all,

I have hold a HK full car license for more than 10 years and recently converted it into UK full lincense.

The question is, for insurance purpose, does my HK driving experience help to reduce the insurance cost?

As I found, many comparison website only ask how many year you held the UK full license. Does it mean they don't care how many years you drive outside UK before. :j

  • When I moved back to the UK from working overseas for several years, my overseas insurers (who were a subsidiary of a UK insurer) gave me a letter stating my driving record and no claims discount. This was then accepted by my new UK insurers.

This was several years ago though - before the advent of internet based price comparison sites and everything was handled through a friendly high street broker.

However, I maintained a UK driving licence throughout this period so our our situations are not directly comparable.

    Hope this helps.

If you've been able to exchange your HK license for an UK license it means that it was recognized by DVLA.
So when asked how long you've had a full driving license you can count the time you've had your HK license. But you'll probably have to be able to prove it.

That said, I think that what's most important is your age group and the no claim period you can prove and have accepted by an UK insurer.

Not really, I found that the number of years you held the license is also important. 10 years driving experience can slash a quote from 1000 down to 300!!!

Try an Insurance Broker in an area with a high density of Common Wealth immigrants such as Southall, they will be experienced in your situation and know / have deals with Insurers for policyholders with exchange licences

That's quite a bit hard to prove as my HK license is submitted to the DVLA and there was no proof left behind.....
