How long does a payroll run take?

I have to ask the boss for payslips every month otherwise I won't get them. His excuse is that he "hasn't had time" to do them. I find this hard to believe.
Therefore, could anyone who works in payroll give me a general idea of what is involved? There are 4 employees. He uses Sage Payroll.
It doesn't bother him that legally he has to give us payslips. I have reminded him of his responsibilities numerous times. Then there is the fact the paye reference on the P60's for the last 2 years is wrong. Apparently the accountant is dealing with this and will take 3-4 mths. Then of course there is the case of missing NI contributions for the last 5 years.
TBH it is a total mess and I'm fed up. Wish I could resign but I can't and without any NI wouldn't get jobseekers. Have applied for jobs but no luck on that front.
Oh, this is turning into bit of a rant.

I presume you are being paid, just not getting a payslip? Is your pay the same every month or does it vary (hours worked, overtime, etc.)? I don't work in payroll but a simple payroll run for 4 employees should, in my opinion, take less than an hour. If there are variable figures to be entered then it may take a bit longer but probably no more than twice as long. Your boss sounds like a right cowboy, if you have the opportunity to look for something else I would do that.
On the missing NI payements, I think I have read that the employee is entitled to believe that they have been paid, so you may find that JSA wouldn't be refused for that reason - but it probably would be refused for resigning. Another job is definitely your best option.0 -
Seriously, the guy is a complete joker. A payroll of 4 employees, processed on Sage payroll, even with different elements to be added in and taken out for each employee, should take a competent person no more than around 20 minutes to complete. Printing the payslips is just a part of the whole process and involves the extremely complicated action of clicking two buttons.
Honestly, Sage Payoll is so idiot-proof you could train your labrador to use it. Therefore your boss is clearly NOT competent.
It is unbelieveably easy to go back in at any time and print previous payslips for everyone, again in two or three clicks of the mouse. There's no excuse for him not to be providing you with payslips.
I suspect that he is either:
a) not processing the payroll at all and illegally failing to pay your PAYE or NI or employers NI over to HMRC; or
b) a complete idiot who doesn't know how to use Sage properly and is afraid to ask.
I hope you are looking hard for a new job and I hope you find a great one very quickly. And I hope you shop your idiot employer to the HMRC as soon as you've received your last pay.
Edit: Ooooh - that was a bit of a rant from me there too! Sorry about that, but incompetent employers really get on my t!!!s :-)You had me at your proper use of "you're".0 -

To be honest, if your manager operates a payroll then as said above the printing of the final payslip is just one click on the print icon.
It is so simple that following your comments, there is a concern that he is not actually running a payroll, just making payments to you (assume electronically and not cash ?) and possibly not paying the tax and national insurance ?
Please keep all documents - payslips, P60's, bank statements showing your wages being paid.
If I were you I would ring HMRC (you will need your NI number) and confirm the details with them with your P60's and latest payslip (which should include year to date pay, tax, NI figures).0 -

2 minutes. All he has to do is input the income details or hours for each employee and Sage does the rest.0 -

A pay slip is a legal requirement. Do not be scared of any employer and tell them again you are require by law to have one and if they refuse or say they are too busy then just call the IR and report them0 -
The payroll has been "run" as the OP has been getting paid - the only bit missing is the printed payslip.
As 99.9% of the work has already been done to calculate and generate the payment, the fact that they do not seem able to finish the final 0.1% of the process makes me suspicious.0 -

my hubby also said 10 minutesI am journeying to a debt-free life.
Our estimated debt-free date is January 2040. I'm on a mission to bring that date closer!
16/02/23 debts - £9556.38
emergency fund - £00.00
debt-free diary - Time to Face the music and deal with this debt once and for all0 -
As expected he's just making excuses. I don't think he does it each month anyway. Last month pay was £10 short. In April when the tax threshold went up it took 2 mths to get my wage increased.
Whenever I speak to hmrc they don't seem interested, just say speak to your payroll dept and they need the correct info (paye ref) before anything can be done.
So frustrating

There is no way then that they are running a payroll in the correct way as they load the system at begining of the tax year when they have signed off the year end payroll so that woould be automatic.
Seriously you just need to tell them firmly you want a payslip and demand all previous payslips. You can report them for not issuing a payslip and not operating a correct proceedure.
Your company IF doing everything above board will have the ref you need and if they can't tell you they they are not acting legally as I bet they are not even registered0
