BT - No cooling off period?

Hi all,
I'm hoping that someone could help me.
I'm an existing customer of BT and called them 8 days ago to discuss the price of my plan and managed to get my phone & broadband down by a few pounds. This entered me into a new 12 month contract.
I have Sky TV and called them last night to try to negotiate a better TV package, nothing they could do with the package, but they did make me a very good offer on phone & broadband.
I called BT back to get a MAC code and was told that I had to pay a full cancellation fee of £149 which included 12 months at £6.25 & equipment charges?
I argued that I had a right to change my mind within 14 days because of the 14 day cooling off period you get when taking out a contract, but they told me this doesn't apply?
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I was under the impression (perhaps wrongly) that all contracts were subject to a cooling off period?

You were already in a contract, you have just upgraded or extended it it's minimum term. A cooling-off period only applies to new contracts.
I'm afraid that the moral is to research all your options before you commit to a new deal.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks for your comment. Yes, slapped myself around the head last night when I called BT.
I might try to use the price hike get out clause though :-) Where there's a will, there's sometimes a way lol.
