Customs Checks Swiss & CI Flights

I often travel to Switzerland and the Channel Islands which both qualify for the purchase of Duty Free.
At Edinburgh Airport there never seem to be Customs Checks on return to the UK from Switzerland or The Channel Islands.
On my most recent trip "I chanced it " and got 200 smokes on the way out and 200 on the way back.
No one at Customs so I merrily marched through with my loot
Is this the same at other UK Airports - has anyone ever been stopped coming back from Switzerland/CI'S or seen Customs Officers checking arrivals from these destinations ?
Perhaps it is low priority ?

Seems that is the case .....
Have returned to Gatwick today from Jersey - carrying on to Edinburgh.
Had to exit and re enter airport to get connection.
Did not go through Customs on arrival from Jersey - is this normal ??0
