Recent successes getting flight upgrades? (Virgin Atlantic)

Hi all,
Will be flying - with new wife
- to California (from London, 10-11 hrs each way) next month with Virgin Atlantic. Couldn't quite convince myself the extra hundreds of £ were justified on 'premium economy' or business seats, but I am a little over 6'5"/18 stone, (minor non-documented) knee problems, and I am keen to lure them into giving me a bulkhead seat if not a full upgrade...
I've read Martin's relevant article, does anyone have any specific advice from recent successes or attempts, or regarding Virgin Atlantic especially?
