First Call Breakdown? Cheapest or Not?

Searching for Breakdown service, I done a quote on Moneysupermarket. The best for me is through a company called First call. This is what they offer...
Try to fix problem at Roadside: Yes
Call out and up to 1 hours roadside assistance by one of First Call's approved recovery operators to attend the scene of the breakdown. Where possible they will carry out emergency repairs due to an electrical/mechanical failure or an accident.

Recovery to the nearest garage only: Yes

If repairs to your vehicle, due to an electrical/mechanical failure or accident, cannot successfully be carried out at the scene of the breakdown then you will be covered for the cost of the recovery of the vehicle and up to 4 passengers to the nearest suitable garage able to effect a repair, or recovery to your onward destination or home address whichever is nearest.

Roadside help: Yes
Recovery to any UK destination: Yes

If repairs to your vehicle cannot be successfully carried out at the place of breakdown (due to electrical/mechanical failure or accident)you will be covered for the cost of recovery of the vehicle and up to 4 passengers to the nearest suitable garage, recovery to your onward destination or home address whichever is nearest.

Recovery of up to 7 passengers: No

Home start up: Yes

Car hire/Train ticket/Accommodation: Yes

If repairs cannot be carried out within an agreed reasonable period, you will be offered one of the following options:

the cost of alternative road or rail travel for the member and up to 4 passengers from the scene of the breakdown to one destination within the territorial limits* stated. Also a return journey for one person to collect the vehicle upon completion of repairs;

- the cost of one nights accommodation (excluding food and drink) in the vicinity of the breakdown for the member and up to 4 passengers up to a maximum of £40 per person, subject to a maximum of £200 per claim;

- the recovery of the vehicle, the member and up to 4 passengers to any one destination within the territorial limits* stated;

- the cost of suitable car hire for two periods of twenty four hours up to a maximum of £100 per claim.

The maximum payable for any claim from any one breakdown is £3,000.

Average call out time: 30 - 60 minutes
Maximum number of calls per annum: 6
No claims discount: ---
Exclusive Features: 10% discount when you purchase cover for a second vehicle.

Additional Notes:

Your vehicle is covered for call out charges and up to one hour's labour charges, at the scene of your breakdown where your vehicle is rendered immobilised due to electrical or mechanical faults within the territorial limits* stated in the policy wording.
You must notify First Call of a change of vehicle 48 hours prior to a breakdown. Temporary change of vehicles are excluded from the policy. You must also notify First Call with any change of address.

Territorial limits* United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

All this for £42.50. is this going to be impossible to beat.

  • 1st call are good. I had to call them out twice and they sent exactly what was needed very quickly and efficiently.

    This policy is a pay and claim scheme and reimbursement takes approximately 10 days.

    Even better offer, but has a £40 excess if you use the home call out. But its only £32.

    I did see this option but thought it was shocking that they have a £40.00 excess

    I have been with Autoaid for 18mths, and needed recovery traveling home from Brighton to Glastonbury, OH and I got home, with the car on trailer paid them with credit card sent the bill to Autoaid received a cheque back in full payment for cost £267.59 in 5 days.
    Travelled to Berkshire with my brother in HIS car, it broke down, couldn't be fixed so again they got us to Berks. Cost £189.68 cheque received in 8 days.
    I took this out with Auotoaid because for the same service with RAC (been with them 9yrs) they wanted £239 a year. Cost of Autoaid then £29. nuf said!!!!!!!!!!

    Its all well and good having a pay and claim service but if you haven't got the money to pay then what do you do ?

    Seems like it benefits the rich IMO :p

    I am by no means rich, I paid by credit card which gives up to 50 odd days interest free. I received repayment from the company in less than a week.
    Most people have a credit card IMO
