Photo Licencing Question

Need to get into the 21st Century and change my paper licence for a photo licence.
Looking at the forms, I need to supply proof of id (haven't got a valid passport) and if I get the application form checked at the Post Office, I understand the documents are sent away with the application.
If I have it checked at the local DVLA office is the application processed any quicker and do they need to send the documents away as well?

You can apply online - it states:
Please have the following to hand:- your driving licence
- a valid debit or credit card
- your UK passport if you have one
- your National Insurance number if you have one
- details of previous addresses

But I only have a old style paper licence - and I can't do that on line if I haven't got a passport that was issued within the last five years...let alone one that has expired.2014 Target;

Unless you need to change your address/otherwise update, or have lost your old licence, I really can't see any reason to get a photocard licence given the cost and effort involved. And the repeating cost every <10 years.
If you are determined to, there are options other than involving a passport www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/forms/~/media/pdf/leaflets/INF1D.ashx (pages 8 and 9). All options other than a digital biometric passport seem to require someone to sign the back of your photograph though.
You could always renew your passport first, and then use that as the supporting document? By the looks of things you wouldn't even need to physically send it off as they can check identity just from the passport number. You'd still need to enclose a photograph though, but it wouldn't need to be signed. The good thing about that would be that both your passport and photocard would need renewing at about the same time, and in future you could just use your passport's photo for your licence renewal online without having to fill a form out or anything.0 -
I've still got my paper licence and unless they force me, I have no intention of updating and joining the DVLA money wagon.0

I haven't lost my licence and really didn't want to change it but I need to fly and so need some sort of photographic id - and its cheaper than renewing a passport that I'm not going to use in the foreseeable future.
Agree with it being a money making exercise though2014 Target;

Make sure the photographic ID isnt going to be a passport or go away. Watching that airport show in TV
and for some reason they insisted on the passenger having a passport.
Refused any other photo ID.

Keep your paper licence, don't go over to photocard unless you have to because of the cost. Even if you're flying domestic, airlines will require ID and many do NOT accept driving licences as valid ID.
