I want to buy a second car - best way to insure ?

I wish to buy a second vehicle and obviously insure it.
Is there a good way of going about this ? I notice on comparison sites that there doesn't seem to be a way of showing that this is a second car (I hope you understand what I mean !).
I currently have my car insurance with Directline but being an MSE diehard I would like to shop around - any ideas or experiences please ??!

Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

It doesn't matter if it's a second vehicle or not as long as the main driver is correctly identified and there's no doubt about it (for example a parent who insures two vehicles but has a son as a named driver, when the son doesn't own a vehicle, will immediately raise suspicions about "fronting")
But you can't use the same NCD on more than one vehicle at a time, unless the insurer has specifically offered to match the existing NCD on a second vehicle. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.

So would I have to declare that there is no NCD to apply ?
Thanks for your help so far. Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -
I would contact your existing insurer first of all. Depending on the grouping of the second car, it might be cheapest to do a change of vehicle and then insure your existing car as the second car.
Insurers may match the bonus provided the driving profile is the same e.g. if there is only you on the policy there is a good chance. However if you now have two cars and there are other drivers on the policy insurers may believe that the main driver of the second car is going to be one of them!0 -
As Bouncydog says, phone your insurer and see if they'll match your NCD. It's unlikely you'll save any money shopping around as you need NCD to get the best price.
I was in the same boat 2 years ago, two cars and one NCD but Admiral matched my discount as long as I was the only driver.0 -
If you are the only insured driver on both cars then the fact it is a second vehicle can result in a discount as evidently you cannot drive both cars at the same time. If there are any other named drivers on either vehicle the fact you now have another vehicle is simply a small discount as most insurers, including via the aggregators, do ask if you have access to other vehicles or how many vehicles your household has.0

I have sometimes had 3 cars. It's just a matter of getting quotes or asking your insurers and then comparing the results.
Some insurers have multi-vehicle policies. They are not necessarily cheaper than insuring with 3 separate companies, but they might be, depending on the circumstances, type of car, your record, where you live, age, etc.
Consider a low mileage or classic car policy. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The simple thing is you buy a vehicle go for insurance of your second vehicle.0
