hi, i visited new york June 2005 for 5 days.
Mainly i used https://www.tripadvisor.com to find a decent hoel as it's packed with hotel reviews - i stayed at the Millenium Hotel on Broadway - excellent location and a good price thru expedia.co.uk. I booked flight and hotel thru expedia
The forums on tripadvisor.com had lots of good advice, the most useful for me was to book attraction tickets in advance as it was pretty busy in June when i went: Basically, there are two lines when you get to empire state building, liberty island etc. The 1st line is to buy ticktes, the 2nd line is to actually get into the place.Bypass the first que by purchasing tickets on-line before you go. It's usually cheaper and saves a lot of your precious time while you're there. 5 days wasn't enough for me!
Try https://www.esbnyc.com for Empire State Bldg tickets
https://www.statuereservations.com for Liberty and Ellis Islands
    Or do what I did:
https://www.coachusa.com/newyorksightseeing/booking.asp?action=ProductDetail&productId=1378 - this is a package of bus tour (with Gray Line), ESB and Liberty Island tickets. Chances are, if you're going to NY you'll visit all of these places. Booking together works out cheaper than buying seperately.

I booked the tickets on-line and picked them up from the tour company's office a couple of blocks from Times Square. And from another "money saving" angle, pay on a card that doesn't charge you for foreign trasactions e.g. nationwide (check out the Credit Cards section of the website).

    Def check out tripadvisor though.
Hope this helps, have a great time!
