Data Recovery as part of home insurance policy

Do many/any home insurance policies cover the cost of recovering data from a faulty portable hard disk drive?

I know some include digital downloads but what about general data (family pictures, videos etc.).

Don't know of any. Your insurance for this would be to back the data up several times onto different types of media and put copies on another site such as at your parents or friends houses.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Don't know of any either. How much would data recovery from one portable hard drive cost? Probably less than any home insurance policy excess anyway?

probably cost the same as a weeks holiday in Benidorm if your drive is potted. Data recovery isn't cheap for the simple fact that; if you need your data, you'll pay whatever's asked.

Is the drive completely fried or can the PC still 'see' it?

If it can it might be worth trying a recovery tool (http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ - i've used this one a few times and it works well)

If it's badly damaged and can't be read at all conventionally then it's likely to be prohibitively expensive to recover anything (ie possibly £1000s)

    Prevention is better than cure.

If you have a decent internet connection an online backup service is a good option. livedrive came out top in a recent Computer Shopper review but there are many others. For about £50 a year you just set it up and forget about it. If your hard disk gets fried or your PC stolen, everything is still accessible and can be copied to a new PC.

Hi some policies will cover for loss or damage to downloaded data

Taken from my policy book for what is covered -

Loss or damage to downloaded data
We will pay for loss or damage covered under this
section to non-recoverable electronic data that you
or a member of your family residing at your
property have legally downloaded. If you make a
claim for downloaded data we will ask you for
proof that you downloaded this data.

    Excluded -
The most we will pay for any one incident is £2,500.
    - Data download for business, trade, profession or
    employment purposes.
    - Remaking a film tape or disc.
    - Rewriting the information contained on your
    home entertainment equipment.

Check your own policy wording to see if you are covered.
