Stolen giro, 7 weeks for investigation?

And been refused a crisis loan and have to eat at homeless section at local churches till I can make up what is lost.

I was told since its been cashed then they have to wait up to 7 weeks to get the information and then they will DECIDE if they will reissue a payment(not that they will)

Also they tell me I have to fill in 2 forms to declare I havent recieved it.

Just wanted to know what I could do really since this seems extreme plus since I had the giro stolen whats to say these forms dont get stolen? Also I havent recieved payment so why should I do the work for them?

  • What work? Filling in a couple of forms?

If you don't want to, then you are perfectly entitled to refuse.
  • if you get a giro that is the risk. have you thought about opening a basic bank account? at least you can prevent it from happening again
  • If I had 1p for the amount of times I heard "I havnt recived my giro" those were the gold old days when i worked in the Benefits Agency, there is a reason why it takes upto 7 weeks is because if it has been cahsed it will of been sent to Girobank who get all Girochecks, of course they then have to find it, locate it and send it back to the Benefits Office, they will then compare signitures and various other investigations and then decide if they will pay out again, after all they have already paid it once. Im not saying you did cash it but 8 out of 10 times it was a client trying to pull a fast once.

I had a woman once who came in and said she had just cashed all her benefits was out shopping and then collapsed in the street and when she woke up they had taken he shopping, all her money and everything, but Mrs X this is the eight times in three months this has happend to you lol.

Also one women came in and dumper her children on the desk and shouted "You fu****g feed them and clothe them if you wont give me any money, four hours later she comes back and looks around and starts screaming again "Where are my fu****g kids, Social Services came for them madam, about three hours ago.

Oh those were the good old days.

Yeah I knew some squatters who broke into a room downstairs when I was younger who would get a giro claim it was stolen and get another same day(how they did that I dont know maybe as the person was a single mum?) I even remember after the same squatters had broke into my bedsit and stole everything I got a crisis loan(a measly £5, well done jobcentre for being so "caring" lol) sitting waiting for payment some people started chatting to me and asked to buy my giro off me for more than it was worth!(heard the trick is they use the paper?)

My dad told me stories about when I was a kid he was messed around by the jobcentre so he physically glued himself to a chair until he was paid, and he won!

If you chose to be paid by giro I'm afraid I agree, you know the risk involved if it doesn't arrive. You can open a post office account or bank account and be paid securely.
I'm sorry but it would be fair to expect an investigation into who has cashed the giro before it should be replaced.
battyboimatt, I'm sure you, along with others could write a fab book on all the stories told about lost and stolen money!

I chose to be paid by bank, they sent a giro out(yet no one could say exactly why, just assumed it was due to the fact I rearranged sign on)

Report it to the police, then phone crisis loan back with the crime reference number. They'll be more likely take you seriously.
I had to call for a crisis loan once when my card was used fraudulently, clearing out my MA for the fortnight. My bank couldn't do anything until the funds had cleared, so I phoned crisis loan.
They told me they wouldn't even consider my application unless I had a crime number. The police kept telling me to go to my bank as it was card fraud, and I had to push to get a crime number so I could get a crisis loan. :/

It's extreme that they investigate the matter of the stolen cheque before they agree to replace it? Do you think that they should simply replace a cheque willy nilly without investigation and without you officially declaring on paper that it has been stolen? How do they know that you didn't cash it, or collude with someone else to cash it? Of course I am not suggesting you did but they don't know that, not until they investigate it. They cannot go replacing public funds without investigating what happened to the funds that they already issued. I would think that having had the giro stolen, you'd be more careful about ensuring you don't leave the forms lying around to get stolen.

They must investigate this and I really don't understand why you are taking the hump with them about it - they didn't steal it or leave it in a place where it could be stolen.

All you are required to do is complete and sign two forms, stick them in a pre-paid envelope and post them back. Hardly a lot of 'work'.
