Travel Insurance help!!!

Options
Hi,

We have just returned from a three night trip to Barcelona where we had our bag stolen which included two mobile phones, passports, 300 euro, two pairs of prescription glasses, i-pod.

We also had to pay approx. £200 in total to the British consolate in Barcelona for emergency travel documents to get back to the UK.

We took out basic travel insurace via Holiday extras European Travel insurance for up to 5 days for all people travelling. However there are so many exemptions with this policy i'm not sure we are covered for anything.

We have a police report and receipt for the emergency travel documents and can get most of the required information of other items stolen, proof of purhcase etc.

Is there any other way we can claim against the items that were stolen, especially against the emergency travel documents which have cost £100 each as this is extortionate for 1hours admin work at the British consulate in Barcelona.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Before exploring any other route, you need to have a detailed read of your travel insurance policy to see what you are in fact covered for. And it's best to do this before you ring the insurer to make a claim so that you're armed with the facts for your discussion with them.
  • Hi,

We have managed to get some money back from our insurance company for the phones, ipod, and glasses, no where near enough to cover the cost but better than nothing.

I'm just wondering if there is anyway we can reclaim the emergency travel documents we were told we needed which cost £200 in total for the two of us to fly from Barcelona back to Liverpool with Easy Jet, where upon they were kept by Liverpool airport and we now need to pay a further £90ish each to get new passports?

We have receipts of the £200 we paid for the emergency documents. I expected to pay a fee, just not £100 each!

Any help would be much appreciated.

My own policy specifically mentions emergency documents but yours might not. You will only be able to tell if you read your policy. Presumably you asked your insurer when you claimed for the other things? What did they say?
  • My insurers said I was not covered for passports or cash, which does appear correct. I was wondering whether there is any government body which I could contact to get some kind of refund, passport office etc?
