Cancer

There is an 85% chance I could develop cancer due to an inherited gene. I'm 27 and would really really appreciate any advice with what I should do with regards to life insurance/assurance. I'm a teacher and I don't know what would happen if I did get ill with regards to paying a mortgage, or what financial help I could get.

You would possibly have to declare this fact to whoever you get life insurance with, and I would imagine it would mean high premiums

As a teacher you probably qualify for better sick and death in service benefits than most employed in the private sector. First step is to look at your contract of employment/speak to your HR dept to find out what benefits you qualify for.

Then ask yourself some 'what if' questions...how would you cope financially if you were off sick for 6/12/24/60 months? If you have dependants how would they cope financially if you were to die etc.

When you know where your 'gaps' are you can then consider insurances.

You will be asked about any incidence of cancer and other diseases in your immediate family (parents, brothers & sisters) so the issue you raise might affect things. The ins co cannot ask you to have a genetic test to see if you carry the gene and also cannot ask if you have had any predicive test or the results from such a test...but they can still use family history.
