Australian Passport?? Please help

:o Hi All,

I'm not sure where to post this....but if it should be elsewhere please move.

To cut a very long story short I currently have a UK passport (am South African by birth) but don't have a South African passport. My husband has a South African and Australian Passport.

We are seperated at the moment and without have to phone a premium rate number I wonder if you helpful MSE people could help me with my question.

I won't to know if I am entitled to an Australian passport? We have been married 5 years and have a little girl who is 3. As far as I am aware she would get one straight away. What is the procedure? Costs? and how long does it take?

Many thanks for your help

I don't think you will be entitled to one. Take a look herehttp://www.immi.gov.au/.

Click on - Visas & Immigration

Fees etc. are on the site too.

If your husband is an Australian passport holder/citizen, then your daughter could get 'Citizenship by Desent' if you applied for it. I can't remember the charges involved, but it is a pretty straight forward process. You have apply in person to Australia House in London (or you did 3 years ago anyway!)

As for you, unless he sponsored you for a spouses visa to emmigrate, & you lived there for a further 2 years, then you wouldn't be entitled to citizenship or a passport. They don't hand things out as easy as this country! TBH, as you are not together at the moment, I don't think they would consider you for a spouses visa anyway. (we are in the process at the mo - I'm sponsoring OH for a spouses visa, DS has dual nationality because of me- Uk & Aussie)

I suggest you have a look at the Naturalisation rules for the UK. They are a lot tougher for someone who can't get a UK passport because one of their parents were British.

Calm down, don't really care to look at the rules for this country thanks, tbh I don't really know what you're getting at either. The OP was asking about Australian citizenship/passports, which I answered.
