old/un-closed utilities accounts??

hello, apologies if this has already been asked.

does anyone know if its possible to find out if any utilities companies have un-closed accounts in your name?

i have always closed them when moving house but found out just recently that british gas still had 2 other accounts under my name (different addresses) which they actually didnt close despite sending me my confirmation and final bill!

surely its bad for your credit to have multiple accounts still open under many different addresses.

thia has made me wonder if there are any other old accounts in my name lurking around and where i can find out?? otherwise i guess i can only phone up all suppliers i have ever used and ask them to check my name. this doesnt just apply to gas and electric obviously.. :-(
