Omitting search results from sub forums without using advanced search

Would it be possible to have an option to not search child forums when using the 'Search This Forum' tool without having to go on to the Advanced Search page?

Or even better, not search child/sub forums by default and have an option to include results from those sub-forums within the quick search tool?

Assuming that this refers to the 'Forum Search' tool on the top toolbar, I had always assumed its intended purpose was to search the whole forum (as it appears to do).
(How well it does that is a different issue. )

The toolbar below that has an option to search the thread you are in.
As there is plenty of room on that toolbar, would it not be possible to include an option on it to search the board you are in?
That has always seemed to me to be the likeliest thing you want to search e.g. for existing/other threads on the same subject.
I know you can do that via the advanced search, but why make things difficult for the user?

Incidentally what are 'child forums'? (I assume it means child-related boards on MSE.)
