Eon, family of 5.

We live in a detached, 3 bed house with extension and our gas & electricity is with Eon. Our direct debit is at £149 a month, which everyone tells me is an awful lot.

I am the only one home during the day. I use the washing machine and dryer around once a day, the cooker in the evening and the shower runs for about 20 minutes a day. The tv is only on for a couple of hours a day. Other than that I can't think why it would be so high.

It has turned colder so I have had the heating on in the morning for an hour, but I am resisting putting it on, unless I really need to. Obviously it wasn't on during the summer.

DO my bills sound high, or about right for our house and family size?

Have you got the yearly usage in Gas and Electricity in KWh?

    What level of insulation?

£1800/year might be fine given the daily use of a tumble dryer - a washing line will save you money ;)
  • I just looked at my latest bill and I used £150 of electricity since July-Sept and £75 Gas +vat.

I spoke to the lady and she said I can't change my direct debit.

I see I am paying alot really, looking at their other online tarrifs. I am on the online saver.
  • I can't see the yearly useage I am afraid.

We have loft insulation and cavity wall.

Ring your supplier and ask your yearly usage is usually on your bill I thought all suppliers must do this now. DD payments dont give you accurate measure this can be based on previous debt built up ie say winter and or projected usage
  • We have apparently used 7,243 of Electricity and 18.839 of Gas in the last 12 months?

You now have the figures to go to any comparison site with .....

If you were in my region and Scottish Power Online Energy 15 were still available I'd make that about ~ £150O/year.

I would look at what you can do to reduce the tumble dryer usage. Gas seems reasonable given your circumstances.
  • Thanks very much.
  • I left eon as their cheapest tarrif was still uncompetitive for me. Even with the price rises as british gas I was better off. Undoubtedly I did use a lot of electric as we are on oil not gas and use electric for cooking but Ive cut this down and bought a heated dryer rail from lakeland to avoid using the dryer. I worked out the dryer costs around 30p ph to un vs 5p ph for the rail so hopefully is much more economic.
Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you are usually right.
  • Oh that sounds good, I shall look for one of those, thank you.

I have just changed to Npower, they are the cheapest for me.

    Hi Savannah31,

Have you looked if you are on the best tariff for you?

We offer lots of energy saving tips, we have our interactive house online at Eon energy, we have an energy efficiency team, you can call them, and they will advise you how to save energy.

Make sure your have regular checks on your boiler, have you had your home well insulated, it all helps.

    Amy:)
