1GB memory stick not working

My husband's 2-3 month old 1Gb memory stick is not functioning correctly. Although it is detected and recognised, as soon as he tries to access it he gets asked to put a disk in the drive. It almost seems it is recognised as a floppy drive. He was saving to it when everything went pear shaped. He has heard that flash cards sometimes get scrambled but they can be unscrambled. Could this be the problem with his stick ? Any suggestions or past experience of this, anyone ?
