Retirement home managers Peverel to arrange gas + elect?

A retirement apartment complex where my mum lives was trying to get all the residents to sign up to a single gas and electricity supplier arranged by the owners (Peverel) last summer - I recommended to her not to do so, figuring that having some choice is better than giving up her right to switch to a 'middle-man'.

Thoughts?

You are entirely correct. There will be money to be made for the middle-man and perhaps kickbacks from the supplier to them too and the complete removal of choice means your mam will very likely be paying over the odds. I would advise her to vigorously oppose this.

You gave mum exactly the right advice.
Landlords or Managing Agents have no right to dictate to tenants which Utility supliers they should use - The only exception is when the Landlord/Agent has direct responsibilty for the bills, pays them and then sub-bills the tenant.

If the Retirement Complex works under the same system as my Mother-in-Laws, Peverel's action would be astounding as she owns the flat within the complex and pays the Site Owners to maintain the building and it's gardens

I am sending you a PM about this

There were several posts on this some while ago - IIRC it was Southern Electricity offering commission for 'bulk' signings and some UW salespersons trying to sign up clients.
