Japan Advice Thread

I saw the Hong Kong Advice Thread and thought I'd copy!

I'm going to Japan at the end of February for 3 months, beginning with a week or two in Tokyo. Has anyone got any advice about where to go, what to see, places to stay etc? How did you find the language barrier? General impressions?

Hi, can't give advice on where to stay - but helpful tip with the language is that most Japanese are taught how to read & write english in schools but not often how to speak it - so if you want to communicate, write it down, you'll have a better chance of being understood!
