Windows 7 Help Needed

Hi,
Briefly, my daughter has a laptop with windows 7 and has done something to her user account and I cant fathom how to put it right.
When you log in to the user IE comes up and the 'view downloads' box comes up about 10 times showing every program asking to run or save.Also when you click on a desktop item the same 'view downloads' box pops up instead of loading the program. Strangely some of the desktop icons Firefox for example now look different and just have what looks like an IE icon. Other user accounts are unaffected so I could delete the account but would rather find out what has been done and put it right. Any ideas would be great, thanks.

A quick and easy way to fix would be to use Windows System Restore to restore the PC to a time when it was not messed up. Use the latest restore point before the problem occurred.
