Heating Bills

If I leave my central heating on a constant low heat through the night is it cheaper than setting it to come on and off every couple of hours through the night? I've heard that it uses more energy for the heating to fire up each time than to leave it on constantly but I don't want to test the theory and run the risk of getting a big bill so any help would be much appreciated.

  • Is there a particular reason for having the heating on at night-time? Medical, or children getting too cold?

In our house, we add more covers to beds - a duvet underneath the base sheet works really well. If the heating ever comes on by accident we all tend to wake up with fuzzy heads, so prefer it to come on once we're up.

Why not set it to come on 1/2 hour before your due to get up?

In answer to your question though, if I've had to do it in the past i.e. to dry a painted room using or if someone has been sick, it's been more efficient to set the heating to spark up only when the temp drops below where I want it, rather than on constant.

  • Thanks for the advice... The only reason we need it on is because our youngest is only 18 months old and tends to kick his duvet off and can't pull it back over himself. Our house also seems to be bad at keeping heat in so the temperature drops quite quickly. It's only a rented house so there's only so much we can do to eliminate drafts and our landlord is not happy at spending any money on the house.
  • You could always get him a babygro like dressing gown, these have feet in them as well and you zip it up.
