Prepayment cards :( npower

My OH and I recently moved house to another rented property, and having not had to consider the idea that we couldn't choose our own energy supplier since we moved into our first grotty flat 7 years ago and were put on a prepayment thing, we didn't think it would be an issue now.
Unfortunately we seem to have got ourselves into a bit of a situation. We were told that the energy supplier is npower, the day before we moved in, after having paid the deposit etc etc, and that it was on a prepayment meter. Needless to say my jaw dropped. It seems that we are unable to change our supplier at all, or get it changed to a 'normal' billed system which we have always happily used before. Stupid of us not to check - but for various reasons we didn't and now feel utterly ripped off as it is extremely pricey.
We aren't familiar with such systems. Is there any way to change the supplier to another company who isn't such a rip off? Are they all much of a muchness? No way to change to bills?
Thanks for any help.

Well the agents said we couldn't change to billed payments because it runs off a different system? The letting agent also said we couldn't change supplier but I wonder if this is untrue - perhaps we could change to another prepaid system if not billed?2008-2011: £23k of wins
