Thats what I thought.
My dad was selling his 53 reg octy he bought from new. I wasnt sure but after the first tank of fuel (and the fact that I was broke at the time) I was hooked. It really hates petrol stations!!!!
I drove from Eastbourne to Blackpool AND back on a tank a diesel and that was gunning it most of the motorways
Will be selling it to a friend for £1500, so not a lot of money for the car.
Gone back to a BMW an '07 320d, much nicer to drive but less space for the german sheppard and it costs £0.14 per mile so not quite as economical but I am in a better place financially now.
I would recommend the Octavia Estate if you want an A to B box on wheels, its great for tip runs too!"Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a Skoda (never has been really apart from lack of street cred), because they are Volkswagens under the skin and very good ones at that.
I am tempted to buy a VRS Octavia diesel as our next car.0 -
I have been on this website and the interest rates they give out are probably scandalous. I'd like a newer motor, however i've decided it'll not be until i can afford it in cash again. The idea of still paying £250+ per month nearly 3 years after you bought the bloody thing would probably drive me to tears or more! On paper these kind of lenders are not a good idea but if it's your only option to get a new/er car very quickly then for you or some other people it might seem ok....[note, ok]
Its a massive thing to be tied into, especially if the payments are quite steep. if you could russle up around £1500 you could get a decent little motor to nip about in.0 -
I was thinking about going down the finance route (fair credit), but don't want to keep a car for 3+ years and the interest is a disgrace from companies like those mentioned. Least with a "banger" it'll be yours out-right. Different storyif the interest wasn't so much though.0

Barclay card offered me a credit card with 1200 on it
As far as i'm concerned, there's your answer. Grab yourself a little runaround, but at this price the market is a mine field. You'll really need someone with a good knowledge of motors to go and vet your choices, or even make arrangements for viewings themselves. Alot of £1K cars are a few hundred quid cars in disguise.
Good luck and let us know your choice, or better still, post a question on the driving forum for suggestions. You'll get some great advice there.0 -
If you have old banger income make do with an old banger nothing wrong with that, some good advice above about avoiding finance.0

Some excellent advice folks, thank you!
Good news is I have obtained 2K loan off a family friend. So I basically will want a car that will last me till next summer, I am looking around and using Parkers guide and can already see cars in dealerships going for £500-£1000 more than they are worth.
Have looked at so many finance routes and the money you lose after X amount of years is ludicrous, especially when you have an asset that is always depreciating in value.
Foxy stoat, top post! I am definitely after a German car and I know Skoda are basically VW's ugly cousin, but basically are just as efficient and reliable.:T0 -
No worries my man! It makes sense to borrow with 0% interest and no late fees !!!
I still have my Octavia up for £1500 as it goes as my friend who was gonna buy it cant sell his car so that will be going on ebay soon, just looking on there and autotrader and theres lots to choose from upto £2K, but I would suggest test drive as many local cars as you can and dont buy the first one you come across."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0
