Boot CD just to run web browser?

Following the demise of the hard drive in my friend's old laptop, until he can afford to buy a new machine, can anyone recommend a boot cd that will allow him just to use a web browser?

He would be using a wired connection to a router. Preferably something that would boot without user intervention. Are there any open source cds that would do the trick?

One possibility is linux (although I'm not too sure if it needs and hard disk space for the swap file but I think this runs in RAM> If you download an ubuntu live cd (or buy one of the mags with it on) then that should boot into a desktop with web browser
Space for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though

Or use BartPE to create a Windows XP "preinstalled environment" CD.

  • Use ubuntu linux, has everything u need.

Can run of a CD and has IM, Web browser, Open Office, and tons of other handy things, takes about 30 days to get the CD unless you know anyone who can download and burn for you.

CD's are free to order all the ask is for you to order more and give them away :P

I use it when windows dont like me and refuses to start up :P

  • I would use "damn small linux"

Its a 50MB liveCD that has Firefox. It can be run in the RAM so is lightening fast.

Running Ubuntu off a LiveCD can be tedious especially if your friend has a slower machine.

As per Kingmonkey, DamnSmallLinux would probably be best for an older machine with low ram.
