Costco is great for some things - especially drinks for kids like Capri Suns etc. - and electricals can be very cheap (but check prices). We buy all our batteries there too.

But - DVD/Video/PC Games are much more expensive in Costco than other places, so shop around and don't assume everything in there is a bargain.

Tyres have always been a good deal in there as far as I am concerned.

To all those who travel often or have family in the USA try and go to the local Costco there to get you membership, not so many papers required and much cheaper. If your friend/relative is already a member, get a secondary from them, even cheaper! Costco is an international chain of wholesalers so it has to take the cards from any valid member in the world.
  • Hi,

Big fan of costco - when its busy the place does not feel that its closing in on you - plentyfull car spots large ones as so you can all you doors open to pile in the purchages.

I the items they sell good quality and like other people said very good returns policy and staff seem very happy

I'd say the membership fee is well worth it. The only problem with the place is stopping yourself spending far too much on luxuries...a lot of the stuff in there is difficult to buy anywhere else. Has anyone *ever* been in there and left spending <£40?

Few items that haven't been mentioned
...contact lens solutions are very cheap in there. It may be possible to match the pricing online, but when I last wore them (admittedly a couple of years ago) no-one came near on the high street - typical cost was a third what my optician charged.

...I can't believe no-one's mentioned the cafe. Drink as much as you want sodas for 60p, brilliant pizzas, good hotdogs etc. Take home a massive pizza (about 24 inch?) for approx six quid - you can also get them uncooked, but then you have the hassle of trimming them to get them in the oven!

...toilet rolls - when they were on offer they were ridiculously cheap - buy a year's supply.

...the meat is not only reasonably priced, it seems to be v.good quality, certainly better than supermarket

...cheapest place (apart from online) for cat food in my experience, other than when Safeway had offers on Felix.

...I don't have my receipt, but I'm not convinced that an earlier poster's correct that dishwasher tablets can be got cheaper elsewhere - the latest Costco offer was (ISTR) buy one get one free, and they're already cheaper than other places at full price.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

Plus if you're in the USA with kids you can always pop into Costco for a cheap lunch (Pizza and a Coke is a couple of quid) and you can even get your digital photos developed in an hour or two - great if you want to have a cheap meal, then pop down to Monterey Aquarium, then call back on the way home to collect your piccies!!

I’m surprised that nobody who has visited Costco while in the US and eaten there have mentioned the super size vanilla ice-cream on a stick that is hand dipped in thick milk chocolate and rolled in course chopped mixed nuts. A meal in itself and at $1.99, a real bargain.

I thought they were sooooooo good that I urged Costco head office to introduce this product into the UK. Although I received a courteous response, their ice-cream has yet to materialise here.

I’ve heard that Costco, Lakeside have applied for planning permission to build their own petrol station but that the local supermarkets are opposing it. I bet they would give the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury’s a good run for their money.
