main driver insurance
Options
My H passed his test in march and we've been sharing a car since then. Insured in my name with him as named driver.
We're considering getting a 2nd car for me, but I'd still need to be insured on the 1st car.
He would then be the main driver and obviously the insurance is sky high! Comparison sites quoting around £1200 :eeek:
What options, if any, are there to try and get the cost down?

afaik not really you would have to declare hes the main driver or that would be fronting-its very high at the moment for everyone i passed 4 years ago this month and i still pay 750 a yearWhat goes around-comes around0

If you can grin and bear it, it's worth paying and start building up some no claims for him. Are here any other experienced drivers you can add to his policy as named drivers, as this usually helps. Will the car you buy for yourself be cheaper to insure for him, and you insure the current car? The choice of cars, even down to trim levels/number of doors etc between the same models can make a difference
Nothing else I can think of, sorry. A year with a clean licence & no claims will soon see the premiums fall, at the moment he's an unknown quantity, and inexperienced - that's how the insurance see him anyway!0 -
some god points there flash especially about the type of car-dont get anything too big sporty or any modificaitons on it-that way the second car might work out cheaper to insureWhat goes around-comes around0

Thanks guys, what a drag
The current car is an automatic as that's the licence he holds. It's not massive (1.6 megane) but we need something a fair size to share when we go camping.
So the 2nd car would be manual and his only option would to be insured on the megane with me as named driver.
Without me, premiums were £1500, the £1200 was with me as named driver.
I think we'll wait until his 1st year is up. On confused.com, they asked about driving experience when the insurance isn't in your name, so maybe he'll get some credit for that even though it isn't proper NCB.
What an expensive job this is!0 -
I may be wrong here, but I thought the insurance companies were more lenient regarding "fronting" in the case of couples with both cars registered at the same address, as it is pretty normal for a couple to have two cars which are used by both people. Otherwise, how would multi-car insurance policies work? Presumably only one person has to be named as the policyholder for both cars...
OP - have you tried getting a quote for a single policy for both cars with you as the policyholder?Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -

Most of time the couple have a policy each, with the other partner as a named driver.
Op best bet would be to wait until the year is up, then try to get a policy for your husband as policyholder, and main diver for the Megane, with you a a named driver, then insure the new car for yourself using your existing ncd.
Mid term changes will be very expensive otherwise as well, with cancellation fees to take into account.0 -
Throwing out a random thought, are insurance premiums higher for people with automatic only licenses?0

i have an auto license and i think it is yes-you couldnt front on the other car though coz he only drives an auto yiou, would be caught out doing thatWhat goes around-comes around0
