H.samuels

hi,
On 09/11/2006 I took my citizen watch that had glass broken at 12oclock (glass in watch) and steamed up to H.samuels.The assistant had a look and suggested that I needed to repair the glass that would cost 31.99 pounds. And the movement was working properly so I needed the standard repair I paid the total amount of 31.99 pounds and was told to collect on 18/12/2006. I phoned up on the date 18/12/2006 and was told that it had not yet arrived and was told to call in after Christmas. I received a postcard from h.samuel on the 5/01/07 witch stated (watch also 69.99 pounds for service as well as 31.99 pounds for glass. Today 19/01/07 I went to inquire what the charge was for and was told it was for service. So I asked if could speak with the manager and was told in a high and mighty manor that I am the manager. So I asked what service do you mean and was told that the watch was broken when I gave it in. I am adamant that the watch movement was working and only had broken glass and steam on the glass as did the assistant on the day I took it in to be repaired. The reply I got was suggesting that I was lying about the condition of the watch when I gave it in. I tried to explain that it was ok when I gave it in and the damage had occurred when the repair was being undertaken. It only needed a replacement glass and I was ignored. I have been insulted by the manager who was not cooperative enough to resolve the matter.

Contact your local Trading Standards office. H Samuels will have sent it away to a jobbing watchmaker. They probably paid £20 for the work all in.

Next time you have a broken watch look for a local watch repair. £31.99 for a glass replacement:eek: £69.99 for a service

A local repairer would do the glass on a bog standard watch for between £5-£10. A service usually £30.

I don't think a citizen watch is worth £100 you could probably buy a replacement for less than 1/2 that price.

  • Un-authorised work was carried out on the watch - they should have contacted you asking for permission to carry out the additional work before proceeding. If the watch mechanism itself was broken/damaged as they claim, how would a simple 'service' put this right?

Hi deanos on the receipt it had replacement glass and that’s it. The assistant that was serving me had a look and could see the movement working so was advised to have the glass replaced only. Mam

Hi poppy9 the watch was worth 200 pounds when I bought it is a titanium one.

I had a 250 pound watch that needed a battery replacement and a local repairer damaged all the movement in the watch so could not trust a small repairer that’s why I took it to h Samuels.

Hi roz-v I rough a letter to h sams ant told them that they had damaged my watch and now they wont me to pay for there mistake. I got a reply that it was damaged before I bought it in and that they wear not going to do anything about it. So I tuck in a different watch to a different h sams and it had the battery out so the movement did not work and it had a broken glass. They wrought on the receipt that the watch is broken and the glass is to. So once I Had this receipt I wrought to head office showing them that if my watch was broken It should have said it on the receipt. Got a reply as before that they not liable for the damage. IV gave them 21 days to reply and after that ill take them to court and that’s what ill do today I am of to get the relevant papers. I like a good battle mam

Ultimately even if the watch was broken, you did not authorise them to do this work so there was no contract for it and they cannot charge you.
