Is this fronting?

Options
Hi folks.

I'm currently carless.

Anyway, I have the opportunity to borrow my Mum's car for a couple of weeks as she's not needing it. I'm a named driver on her policy already as I have borrowed it in the past for odd days if my car was being MOT'd etc. I'll be using it for commuting to and from work etc.

I understand fronting, where someone other than the main policy holder is the main driver (usually a parent insures a kid's car in their name and the kid drives it, getting cheaper insurance). Now is me borrowing the car and being the main driver for two weeks considered fronting?

How is the distinction made between being a named driver using the car for a period, and being fronted? I usually drive the car for a day or two every year which is fine, but how about a chunk like this. I won't be the main driver in the grand scheme of things over the course of a year, but will be for a couple of weeks.

  • A policy is, usually, an annual contract and it will be over the span of the year that they will typically look at.

That said, if you have an accident whilst commuting it is going to ring alarm bells and may prompt them to ask questions. If you can demonstrate that this is a short period and not the norm then you should be fine. What do you normally do to get to work etc?
  • Normally my own car. That was written off and due to moving house, getting married, and going on the honeymoon I have not had chance to replace my car. So since the honeymoon I've been relying on lifts, buses, and occasionally borrowing my Mum's car.
  • I would suggest that the temporary nature of it means it would probably not be fronting but perhaps give the insurance company a ring to confirm? They are the only ones that can confirm either way what they would be happy with you doing.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • Thanks for the input. Will get her to make a call to be safe.
  • Just an update for you.

My Mum rang her insurers and explained. They advised that there is no issue as she is the main driver over the total policy period. They just put a note on the account that I would be using the car a lot over the next couple of weeks including commuting and that was that.

    Thanks for the help.
