FLY drive to USA with a twist????

Hi. Just thought I would see if anyone has flown to the USA lately, but arrived at one destination and departed from another? I want to arrive in Orlando, but leave from Denver. The same goes for the car. Pick up in one place and drop in another... I know it will be a lot more money, but would it be cheaper than driving 3000 miles back to Orlando from Denver?

I had a trip a few years ago where I flew in to Boston and home from Pheonix, it was no problem at that time but the security has been tightened a lot since then and you might face a few extra questions but I imagine it would still be ok.
The car hire should'nt be a problem if you use one of the major players such as Alamo or Avis, they have a one way drop-off hire available for a small fee. The big thing to remember is to get your insurance before you go as all the car hire companies try to sell you extra at extortionate rates.
Check out Expedia under their multi-destination heading to give you an idea of costs.

Its called an Open Jaw ticket, quite common. So long as you return to your original departure airport there's no problem.

If you're clever you could get a return flight to Denver that has a stopover in Orlando (or somewhere near)

With scheduled airlines you are allowed one stopover (for any length of time) at any airport that is on the normal route.

I'd check out the one way drop off fees as they can be very expensive!

Budget airlines in the US could get you back to Orlando cheaper.

    HI:

    Have a look at https://www.autodriveaway.dc/carlist

You'll find they have an office in Denver - you get to drive other people's cars for free across the States.

Thanks. I phones oned one agent yesterday. They said it was fine to fly in to one airport and leave from another providing the carrier serves both destinations. That's good. Also a one way rental on a car add $500 to the cost of the rental. Ouch! But considering a 3000 mile drive, gas, food and motels is actually works out cheaper. Hmmm. Too early to do anything yet, but I welcome ideas...

N9eav, I doing a similar thing this summer, flying into Houston then driving to Nashville. I will probably get an internal flight back to Houston from there to save driving back.

Make sure you check out https://www.carjet.co.uk on prices from different location drop-off. No hidden charges and EVERYTHING is included..including your 1st tank of gas to get you started ;)
:D *If you like the advice I give...let me know by clicking the THANKS button* :D
  • I've done open jaw tickets a couple of times and used Traifinders who know what they are doing. The Bristol office no is 01179299000. Also its probably worth looking at http://www.airline-network.co.uk which is a good flight comparison site.
Its worth shopping around for car hire as one way costs vary a lot. One ways within California and Florida are usually free (I know this doesn't really help you).

my inlaws are going to the US in April, picking up a car in Miami dropping off at Atlanta, they were quoted $200 - $300 on top of the normal rental, Fifteen02.com managed to get them a really competative quote with a free upgrade through Budget for with only $100 extra to pay for the one way drop off. They have used both fifteen02 and budget before and the service was excellent. We are also going in April but not having a drop off charge and was quoted with Budget £60 cheaper than Alamo and £114 cheaper than Dollar because of the free upgrade, cant find cheaper anywhere.

Last summer we flew into Atlanta and out of Wahington (Dulles) we went with KLM which meant a hop to Amsterdam before changing to their partner Northwest. It was still the cheapest option. The good thing with KLM is that they don't charge more for these "open jaw" tickets as some airlines do. I think we paid $300 extra for a one way hire car drop off but it was well worth it for the time and driving it saved.
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!
