PC upgrade help

I have just upgraded /rebuild my pc which was 8 years old to a sata system on a new motherboard I have installed and partitioned a new 500GB sata HDD into two sections and installed Win 7 On One and XP on other and use a dual boot. I have left my two old IDE drives in situ one WIN 7 the other XP, my original plan was to then copy over all my progs and data onto the new HDD and then use these two IDE HDD's as backup drives, the problem is I am being denied permission to access folders within these old drives therefore I cannot transfer my old folders and there data over,I particularly want my old email folder and contents from my Thunderbird installation into my new T/B installation.
A complicated Q but I have been trying suggestions obtained elsewhere on the net but no joy so far.some help and advice please
