Public transport - Peak fares

Intoduce mandatory seat reservations?
OK not practical with commuter trains but it's often put forward as 'the' solution but the alternative is putting the fares up enough to discourage sufficient people from travelling at that time.
Oh,I know all the arguements but I like to ask them who moan about overcrowding what they think should be done about it instead of moaning. Have answers ready i say.

'More "carriages" ' would be the glib answer - that again completely misses the point0 -
Indeed. Also they would be forgetting extra platform length and so on.. the list would be quite endless..."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0

Apologies for not grasping your point. Peak fares do not assist with the overcrowding issue.
I wasn't moaning about the overcrowding, which I agree is an issue and the main issue for peak fares, however my point was supposed to be that with or without peak fares you have over-crowding.
The fact is, people who pay peak fares suffer the worse of the overcrowding. If there were no peak fares people would still have the choice whether to travel at 8am or to travel later, when the overcrowding was reduced.
That is if they don't have to get to work for a set time or have other means of getting to work.
Sorry if it seems an argumentative topic, I was just looking for general opinions and ideas, I don't claim to have all the answers.0 -

If I have to travel, and timing is not critical, then I will buy an off peak ticket... and of course travel at off peak times.
Are you suggesting that I am the only person who thinks like that?
If so, then I agree.
One person not travelling at peak times will make no difference to the overcrowding issue.
However...0 -
A lot of people don't have a choice but to travel at peak times, the rail operators know this so charge more. It has nothing to do with overcrowding.
It's like taking a holiday when the kids are on half term, it always costs more.0 -
Of course they do.

Peak fares don't help with the overcrowding issue as at peak times public transport is overcrowded.
I agree, if timing is not critical some people will buy off peak tickets, but generally off peak travel is less crowded as the majority of people are travelling at peak times. This seems to suggest either people don't feel the have any other option, or that they don't think like we do. Either way, charging peak fares is not currently working to solve the issue of overcrowding, so what other purpose does it serve other than as Gordon Hose suggests?0 -
If it wasnt a moan about overcrowding then why mention it in the first place?
And what are your solutions to your questions? You must have thought about this in the first place?
But as ever - Its supply and demand. If you dont have to travel during peak times then dont and you wont pay the top whack.
I thought this sort of thing was primary school standard and easy to grasp hold of"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
If peak fares really don't help with the overcrowding issue then clearly they are not high enough
There is always a choice. Sometimes not a palatable one, but no-one ever has 'no choice'.0
