Lappy switches itself off....

I have a HP lappy bought about a year ago but haven't been using it a lot, so perhaps it has had a full three month use in all.
Lately the fan has been erratic and I noticed overheating, so I got a cooler, which will be good for the other lappies as well. This cooler has kept it nicely but this evening after about 1 hour use the lappy just switched off. I noticed it was hotter than usual, so I placed in on the cooler in such a way that the fan was under the hottest bit.
Anyway now it has switched itself off again, after about a couple of hours from the first time.
It's not really terribly hot, but could this be the cause?
Thanks

Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I don't have much experience with Laptops, are you using battery or mains power ? Are you able to get into the casing to see if there's a build up of dust etc /0

I use the lappy as a desktop so it's always on mains. I don't know how to get into the inside of it...
Strangely enough it has cooled considerably nowI wonder what is causing it.

Hmmm.. not keen on spending any more. I can feel with my hand when the temperature is getting too warm...
But my main concern is - is it the temperature that causes the lappy to switch off, or should I look for other causes too?Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
It's free..
The last time I tried it, it was a bit buggy, left the fan running after I exited the program, until you rebooted, but that might be fixed now.
Laptops shouldn't overheat, unless you block the fan/cooler holes, never seen the need for a cooler tray myself, unless you wear furry trousers, and have it on your lap.
If it's still under warranty, call HP while you can.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Oh is it a software? I just had a look at the "temperature" page, and saw all these gadges so I lost interest. Will have another look.
Now please? Is it the temperature that causes the switch off or could there be something else instead/as well?Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
That's the million dollar question, I'll just put my ESP head on..
Does it just die? Does it do it when you are doing something processor intensive, watching video's?
Is your AV and anti spyware upto date?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

No it just froze for a fraction of a second (the cursor didn't move) then the screen just went black. All I had open was the usual: The browser with MSE on, Live Messenger (I was chatting to someone) and a game of card. This is a 100GB HD and 1GB ram lappy.
AVG, spybot and ad-aware all up to date.
Hmmm... maybe the temperature thenBe careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
