This thread is specifically to discuss feedback for
Vonage (Link)

If you've used Vonage to make free VoIP calls to friends and family (either abroad or here in the UK), please give us your feedback.

Now back to the original post...

Anyone tried this?

Sounds like an interesting idea. Instead of having a home phone line you plug this box into your router and all calls are routed as VOIP over your broadband connection. You can even plug a normal phone into this box.

£3.99 a month it is, you get to keep your phone number and you get unlimited uk calls. Of course, drawback is if your broadband is down so is your phone line.

They also do a 30 day money back guarantee. Only problem is I guess if you've gone and transferred your BT number and cancelled the line it might cost to get reconnected if you decide to go back?

As most people have mobiles these days I find we dont use the home phone that much anyway.

  • We have used Sipgate as our only landline for several years now, very happy with the service and the price.
We just have the free account, we spend about £3 a month, mostly on international calls.

Be careful about planing to transfer your number, if you get your broadband down your phone line then your ISP may not allow you to have broadband without also having telephone service.
Our Broadband was Virgin Media Cable, and our old phone line was BT so the number transfer was not problem, but Sipgate did change us £20 to do it.

if you are talking about Virgin cable broadband then there is still the rental of the broadband service, if you are talking an adsl type service you have to pay line rental regardless if you plug a phone in or not..BT or a company using BT's lineplant are not going to provide/maintain a line to your property without you paying line rental, your post implys you pay £4 and broadband cost, this is only the case with VM and their stand alone broadband starts at £21/month

    OP fails to mention.

5.99 a month after 3 months. on top of your broadband and line rental or broadband only rental.

Does not include calls to 0845/0870 numbers.

Fair usage policy of 2000 minutes a month.

Line-activation fee of £9.99 and a delivery fee of £8.99, and you will need a Vonage adapter, which may be free (it depends on your existing broadband set-up).

If you cancel before 12 months (after the 30-day-money-back-guarantee), you will be charged £23.99.

Good point. So even if you have a line with ADSL only you cant cancel the line rental part of it?

Ah not so good then. Might as well just go to someone like primus for cheaper line rental.

  • We also only use a VOIP phone though through another provider

As our provider is aimed more at businesses, it doesnt have an all inclusive option but its call prices are cheap, especially for overseas calls which we do a lot of and the call is routed in most cases via the same points as if it were a BT call. A few of the providers we looked at previously were fractionally cheaper but calls were routed all over the place and thus much more issues with lag an drop outs.

That said, if you want a geographic number it is £2 a month otherwise its free and no minimum duration contract etc as its all PAYG.
  • Hi, I have used a Vonage number for 18 months as a dedicated business line and it has been great. Reliable and great value along with lots of settings and options on call forwarding, voice mail, duration of rings etc.
    I wouldn't be without it.
    regards Guy
