you don't say how many children but the differences for 1 child would be about £3k and if 2 children then about £5k, given that we are half way through the tax year the overpayment will be around half that. I would expect that they will stop your payments and you will be able to make arrangements to pay back the overpayment

  • preseumably they will take it back by lowering your tax credit payments

Well the difference is 19k so theres bound to be a decent over payment in there.

Are they not able to tell you what the over payment is on the phone? Some times they can - sometimes they cant.

You could always run your figures through the online calculator (http://taxcredits.hmrc.gov.uk/Qualify/DIQHousehold.aspx) for a rough guess of what you should have been paid. We (the MSE forum users) wont be able to tell you anything specific, only a rough guide. It's Tax credits you need to be speaking to.

I'm baffled as to why you never rang them when they sent you an award notice AFTER you had sent back your renewal (Regardless whether they got your renewal or not they would have still sent you an award notice)

I would doubt you would be in reciept of any further payments so would not be relying on this for xmas / child care. They have technically already paid you your allowence and then some, instead of it being staggered over the year you've had it all within 6 months IYSWIM

If you feel you are unable to afford living expenses then you may be able to argue the over payment but as you gave the incorrect figures then id be very surprised if you would win. You could post an SOA on the debt free board and they can help you to budget better to ensure you can live within your means
