What sort of food do you want to take? I've not been to Portugal but if it is like Spain they sell English food in the supermarkets. You should be able to find out on the Customs & Excise website what you can take. I'm sure meat, milk products and certain fruit. However, surely if you take food with you it will add to the weight of your luggage, especially if you take tins of stuff.
When we first went to Spain we took teabags but we don't even bother with that now. You can get everything you need locally.0
