Can be used on separate ring main, as long as it is within the same consumer unit (fuse box). They will work fine

My understanding of Homeplugs are they are great if the 2 PC's are plugged into the same electrical ring (i.e. on the same floor) but not if they are separate floors or need wireless?

They don't, in fact, need to be on the same electrical ring and usually work fine between different storeys of a premises, provided that all the electrical rings in the individual residence are connected to the same consumer unit.

In other words, if there are several different and self-contained dwellings in a building, each with its own electricity consumer unit, then connection and security will be maintained and restricted between the powerline adaptors in each of the individual dwellings – even if some of those dwellings are on more than one storey of the building.

  • A little off topic but, where does the signal travelling via your power cables actually stop and what causes it to stop "there"? I know as is said above it doesnt have to be on the same ring. So does the consumer unit stop it travelling further back up the power supply chain and what in the unit does the blocking?

Surge protection will stop it, the main consumer box will reduce the signal a lot, but it is possible to send it through 2 consumer box's, some people have managed it, but signal will be very weak. Something to do with same single phase (3 wire).
