Ok, I'll start again.....
two choices in the main.
Choice 1. The fittings in your link above(for £1) are to fit your hard drive(SATA) into the DELL. The DELL has the option to take both of the types of fittings.
This choice is a little more fiddly, as it might require changing a setting in the BIOS and installing new drivers. Then again it might not. Also, if you have any important data on the disc, we could use a special Live CD to help you retrieve it, before we run a clean install of Windows using the existing DELL licence.
Choice 2. If you would prefer, you can buy the cheap hard drive for £14.59 and use the 'old type fittings'(IDE) that may already be installed with the DELL. Then we can simply run a clean install straight away. That is of course if you are sure there are no other problems with the DELL other than a missing hard drive.
You can fit your SATA hard drive into the caddy, plug it into the DELL and transfer any important data over to your new install. Then if you wish, you can format that disc and then have a clean portable external drive to do with as you wish.
As to the DELL XP disc....you already have it.0 -

What does this Hard drive look like?
I know it's a bit more expensive but they are in stock local to me.
When my caddy arrives can I use a windows7 laptop to transfer info from old hard drive to my existing external hard drive?
thanks

But it says the item is only available via the website.
Is your 'existing', the Windows 7 laptop? The caddy will work with any machine.0 -
Forgot to ask...is the DELL XP licence/sticker for Home or Professional?0

OK,, the 3.5 HDD external Caddy arrived today. it is IDE/SATA to usb.
The sticker on the 'new' PC is Windows XP home edition
The laptop that I can use for odd times is windows 7.
My existing PC is an HP and runs on XP
The 'new' PC is DELL
I have tried to download pendrive linux but coouldn't understand what I had to do. I ended up with lots of smilies!

So, I guess you can get on with the job of copying the contents of the HP hard drive(or at least the data that you wish to keep) on to the Windows 7 laptop. So you'll need to put the hard drive in the caddy.
Have you purchased the SATA cables or the IDE hard drive?
Forget about the Linux solution. You don't need it now that you have the caddy.0 -

You can delete your post above, as it is not what I need.
From where did that output come?0
