Weekly earnings for SSP

I help run a preschool, and we pay our staff 38 weeks + statutory holidays and then divide by 12 so they get the same each month.

We are currently looking at our sick pay policy (SSP only), and I'm trying to work out if any staff are actually entitled to SSP - most of them would earn over £102 if paid weekly, but their average salary over the year is less, due to the 10 weeks or so they are unpaid. Do I use their contracted hours x hourly rate or should I be dividing annual salary by 52?

    ssp is paid if the employee has an average wage of £102 or more in the 8 weeks before the sickness
