Hamilton, Scotland - any good?

I am planning a wee break at the end of February 2012 through the offer on Days Inns in the Daily Record and thinking of Hamilton as a good base for a day at Edinburgh, a day at Glasgow, but what is there to do in Hamilton itself?

In fact is there enought to do to make it worthwhile keeping a day aside for it lol!

  • You've Strathclyde Park and M&D's theme park on your doorstep. Theres also a cinema and a decent leisure pool (Hamilton Water Palace).

I would choose somewhere like Stirling as a base between Edinburgh and Glasgow rather than Hamilton. Good rail links to both cities (about 40 mins to either city), good motroway links if you are travelling by car, and Stirling itself has plenty of interesting things to do and see from the castle, to shopping and restaurants.

The hotel is in the service station in Hamilton and that is good for motorway links to both Glasgow and Edinburgh but not for public transport. It is possible to walk to the town but it is through a park and I wouldn't walk there at night. Hamilton has the Mausoleum, Chatelherault Country Park and the museum which has the remains of Hamilton Palace in it. There is also the racecourse. Nice places if you get the weather.

The options in the hotel deal are Hamilton, Gretna Green and umm.... somehwere else down that way, so picked Hamilton as the best of a bad bunch purely as it's central and we would be travelling by rail.

Thanks for the suggestions :) any more for any more?
