Dog with no name

Goodness, I spose its a different attitude - a farm dog is a tool. But it does seem sad to me too

It does to me, I'd always name a pet. But on a farm here, yeah, a dog is just a tool. It's more for handiness- rather than remember the names, each dog is unilaterally just 'Dog' or 'Hound'. Means they all respond with one command as well...
I have known a dog called 'Moggy', and a cat called 'Dog' before though!0 -

I grew up on a market garden and we had cats called by descriptors too when I was a kid.. tabby cat and tiger cat etc!
When I was a kid my nan always had dogs and naming them was a doddle for her. A black dog was Blackie, a brown dog Brownie, a spotty dog Spot and so on.
She did call one of her jet black dogs a different name beginning with N once (like so many black dogs in the area) that'd get you hung if you tried it today!0 -
I have 2 cats, and I love them to bits, but they don't really have names.
When I insured them the lady on the phone asked me their names, and when I told her they didn't have names - she said she had to put something in the computer - so I said she could choose. She went for Girlcat and Boycat... they are called that at the vets too now, but they still don't really have names. They respond quite well to Chubby and Fattie! Whatever takes my fancy really. I think it's all tone of voice.
I never named my toys when I was a child either (not that I am suggesting Meg and Mog are toys

My boys - Ralph and Diggs and they do respond well to their names but they also come to other terms, like Diggs is "the little one". If I say to OH, "wheres the little one?" I hear a boomp as Diggs jumps off the bed and comes running down
Ralph is "devil dog" because he curls his lip if you go to take away the sweet paper or crisp bag he has nicked from the bin
He knows "wheres devil dog" PMSL 0 -

My gran named every single dog she had throughout her life, Gem. As in 'he's a wee gem' I remember a border collie, a gsd, another gsd and several cairn terriers called Gem. The lasr Gem was knocked over and killed by the coalman, it was one of the terriers. Her last dog before she died was tanya, after that. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your window

It's funny that even when they're upstairs on the bed they're listening to every word we say!My boys - Ralph and Diggs and they do respond well to their names but they also come to other terms, like Diggs is "the little one". When I got my younger dog as a puppy we called him the little fella as my other dog's a big golden retriever cross, but now he's bigger than her (taller, not fatter!!:)) and we STILL call him the little fella which he knows refers to him!!0 -

How true - sometimes we think ours are sound asleep and OH will say something like "Ill have a cup of tea and then take the boys ................" He only gets that far and both of them are up and waiting for a W A L K.0
