Iphone 4 OS5 lost contatcs & e-mails

I have plugged my iphone 4 today into the pc and upgraded it to os5.
Once it was all finished I discovered that loads of my contacts are not on my iphone and all my e-mails that were on my iphone are gone too.
Does anyone know why this happens? does anyone know what I should do to avoid this in future? I don't even know what I've lost in terms of contacts and e-mails so I won't realise until I go to phone someone!!
Was I supposed to save them somewhere first and if so how and where? thanks so much anyone who can help.

Generally iTunes saves a backup of the phone every time you sync it and especially when you upgrade it. Or it did on mine before I got rid.
You should be able to get this and either restore the phone fully, and transfer the contacts off. Or just get the contacts back from it.
A web search on restoring an iphone from backup, or restoring iphone contacts from backup would likely get you information on how to do this. try this;

Email should just be a re-download, with or without resetting it up again. Depends on what the upgrade has wiped out.
