Any way to get a refund on some train tickets?

I know its a long shot but... I bought a return from Norwich to Manchester from East Midlands Trains yesterday for the 3rd December. They were actually 2 advance singles. But thing is my mates who weren't going (to Man City Vs Norwich) now are so I could go with them if I can get a refund.

The way I understand it advance singles are completely non-refundable but I thought there could be a slight possibility of some kind of cooling off period since I bought online. Although I also understand the Distant Selling Regulations don't apply to this kind of thing so I don't expect its gonna happen.

I don't mind the train but it would be quicker, cheaper and more fun with my mates, so any help would be appreciated.

Cheers, Roy.

    There is no cooling off period, and as you say the DSR doesn't apply.

    The only way to get any value from the tickets is to change them for different tickets for the same journey. You would have to pay a £10 admin fee per ticket plus the extra fare if the new journey was more expensive.

    You have to do this before the booked journey - afterwards it's too late.
  • It's also against the rules to transfer or resell the tickets; But there's nothing stopping you asking on one of the Norwich FC forums if somebody could dispose of the tickets for you, perhaps they might even pay you for the privilege of putting them in the bin ;);)

    I was thinking about that, only thing is I bought them with my 16-25 railcard so I think there would be a limited audience wishing to 'dispose' of the tickets.
  • What you could do if the costings works out as a viable option is this;

    Norwich are away to Everton on the 17th Dec, phone up to amend your tickets to this date and maybe a better time train (£10 amend fee) then gets some day returns from Manchester to Liverpool? Most East Midland trains carry on from Manchester to Liverpool anyway so the split ticket shouldn't involve a change of train.
