£35 cancellation fee !!!

l sold my car last month as l could not afford to run it anymore so l rang the co-op who insured me [ been with them for 5 yrs] and told them to ccl my ins as l no longer own a car they said l was up to date on payment and told to ccl my d/d .
next thing l get a letter saying l owe them a £35 cancellation fee !! there was no mention of this when l rang to ccl.
l accept an admin charge may be due but £35 !! most annoyingly was that it was quite a snotty letter saying l must pay asap or it will go to a debt collector:mad:
always paid by d/d for 5 yrs no probs never missed a payment
thought ld ask on here before paying

any comments on the amount pse or should l ask them for a breakdown of charges or is this normal ?

  • Its sadly usually the norm now to charge. Its just another way to fleece the motorists they sometimes ask also for return of the policy

They probably have this buried in small print, I bet it costs no way near £35 to cancel a policy

£35 isnt bad. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive.

They dont have to break down the amount to you. It is not a penalty charge. It is in their published list of charges and you could have seen it before you bought the policy. So, its a bit late to complain about it after the event.

Cancellation charges exist nowadays with many providers who wish to lower their annual premiums be stripping things out of the premium that may have been included in there in the past. This allows them to appear higher up the quote comparison sites. So, in effect, cancellation charges exist due to consumer demand.

They are also a bit fairer as well. People not using a call centre creating admin will not be paying for it. Whilst those that do are. Seeing as the majority do not create mid term admin, the majority are better off.

If you have paid up do you need to cancel? Cant you just let the policy run until it has finished? That could be totally wrong as you dont have the car anymore - I'm not sure, but maybe worth asking?
